Joel Matip will return to Melwood with thigh injury

Liverpool defender Joel Matip will depart the club’s pre-season tour of the United States with a thigh injury, the club has confirmed.

The Cameron-born centre-half sustained the muscle injury during the Reds first pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday evening.

Matip was replaced after 21 minutes in Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Dortmund in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Bank of America Stadium.

Surgery was required for a thigh injury belonging to Matip in April, an injury that subsequently kept him out for the rest of the 2017/18 campaign.

The injury is not suspected to be serious, but Jurgen Klopp, based on the advice from his medical staff, has decided to send Matip back to Melwood to begin rehabilitation.

The defender would have been unavailable for selection for the rest of the United State tour and therefore it was seen as only best for him to return to Merseyside where he will continue his recovery.
