Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Trying Again for Nabil Fekir?

It has been floated that negotiations have resumed.

Another twist in a transfer saga that feels as though it has been going on for a solid twenty years.

A quick recap in case you somehow forgot: Liverpool were interested in Nabil Fekir and offered a lot of money for him, which his club Lyon accepted. The player agreed a deal with us and even went so far as to record his interviews announcing him as a Liverpool player. Then at the last minute, Liverpool attempted to renegotiate the deal at a lower price, which was refused by Lyon meaning he remains their player. There has been talk that this was down to issues flagged up in his medical, though that is very much speculation.

And now we have a report from The Mirror claiming that Liverpool “have resumed talks with Lyon over a deal for Nabil Fekir”. The article by John Richardson goes on to state that Liverpool have “a belief that a compromise can be hammered out with Fekir finally becoming a Liverpool player once he has returned from Russia [where he is currently playing for France at the World Cup]”.

Fekir is clearly a player Jürgen Klopp and Michael Edwards believe is a perfect fit for the team, so if a deal is possible it would be a huge bonus. While the questions about his fitness still remain, if the club have done a full medical and feel he’s still worth pursuing, we at The Liverpool Offside can’t really argue with that.

The accuracy of this report is under some question. While The Mirror have been fairly reliable in the past on comings and goings at Liverpool, this has generally been from articles written by David Maddock. John Richardson has not previously broken many stories related to the club, so it is unlikely that this is coming from Anfield. Fekir’s agent, or even someone at Lyon, are possible sources, as is the idea that this is simply untrue.

It would make sense, though, to target Fekir again. The deal previously came to a halt just as the player went to focus on the World Cup, so more news when he returns seems very plausible.
