Rumour Mongering: Lucas Vazquez on the Radar?

That’s the talk in Spain.

Now this is a new one.

Lucas Vazquez, currently of Real Madrid, is said to be of interest to a number of clubs including Liverpool. That’s the word of Madrid based newspaper Marca, who claim that “Lucas Vazquez is in high demand from some of Europe’s biggest clubs”. Not to forget the last rumour they cooked up, the article adds that “Liverpool have shown an interest in Marco Asensio, but they’re also in the hunt for his teammate”.

For those unfamiliar, Lucas Vazquez is a hard working, speedy wide player who offers a threat in behind the defence. While he doesn’t have the same level of technical ability as some of his more famous team mates, his blend of athleticism and industry is often a very useful outlet for Real Madrid, and his return of a goal or assist every 152 minutes last year isn’t too shabby at all. With the club apparently looking for an alternate wide forward to rotate with the current front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio ManĂ© and Roberto Firmino, Lucas Vazquez would make a lot of sense as this option. His age (27) is a touch older than ideal, but this isn’t the end of the world.

One does have to be sceptical of this report, though. Marca are known to write a lot of fanciful stories about the goings on at Real Madrid, even if they do have some genuine connections at the BernabĂ©u. Furthermore, there is often a need to hype up Madrid talent, particularly the Spanish contingent, hence the report claiming a number of major clubs are interested. If there are really so many teams after him, it isn’t clear why he’d take a supporting role at Liverpool, especially one that wouldn’t be too different to what he’s already doing at his boyhood club.

File this under the category of “probably not true, but we wouldn’t be upset if it happened”. Vazquez is a decent player, and while he’s probably going to stay in the Spanish capital, there’s no reason why he wouldn’t make sense at Anfield.
