Rumour Mongering: Newcastle Launch Gini Wijnaldum Transfer Bid

The Magpies want to bring Wijnaldum back to Tyneside.

With the arrival of Naby Keïta and Fabinho already and at least one more midfield signing expected to arrive before the close of the transfer window, Liverpool’s midfield is getting crowded, leading to speculation at least one player could end up sold.

According to Turkey’s Takvim at least, the player most likely to leave this summer Gini Wijnaldum, something they claim to know because Fenerbahce are actively pursuing his signature. There’s just one problem, at least if you’re a Fenerbahce fan.

And that problem is Newcastle United are also interested—at least according to the Turkish reports—and a chance to remain in England gives them a clear advantage when it comes to convincing Wijnaldum to sign. Not to mention when it comes to money.

Newcastle are said to have gone as far as to make an opening offer as the look to bring the midfielder back to Tyneside, though just what that offer might be or whether Liverpool are actually giving it serious consideration is another matter entirely.

On that front, it’s worth noting there has been no suggestion from Liverpool that Wijnaldum is a player they might consider selling, and with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain not expected match fit for some time there should still be minutes to go around in midfield.

Still, depending on whether another new signing does arrive and Wijnaldum’s expectations for minutes, a deal this summer doesn’t seem as though it would be beyond the realm of the possible—for now, though, it should probably be filed as unlikely.
