Alisson Will Continue to Wear Number 13 for Liverpool
Despite Loris Karius’ imminent departure, Liverpool’s number one won’t be switching to the number one.
Liverpool entered the 2018-19 season hoping to sell Simon Mignolet and keep Loris Karius at the club as Alisson’s back-up. Instead, it’s Karius who is set to depart the club as the 25-year-old is on the verge of joining Besiktas.
For some, that leads to a question about shirt numbers and whether Alisson will now be able to switch to his preferred number one with the current holder set to depart the club. The short answer is that he will not be able to.
With the transfer window shutting before the start of the season, Premier League clubs have already handed in squad lists of the players they will use for the coming season—and that includes the shirt numbers those players will wear.
As other transfer windows remaining open on the continent it remains possible for clubs to remove players from their lists up until the 31st of August but otherwise it does not allow them to alter any previous existing registration.
That means that for Alisson, he’s already registered with the league for the coming season as Liverpool’s number 13 and even with the number one set to open up—perhaps before the next match against Brighton, even—that won’t change.
For those who may have gotten themselves a kit with Alisson’s name on it that’s probably good news, though one might expect the Brazilian international to change it next year ahead of the 2019-20 season.
