In-form Gomez set to earn England call-up
Joe Gomez has impressed England boss Gareth Southgate and is likely to be named in the squad for the first internationals of the season, according to the Mirror.
Gomez has performed well in his three appearances for his country against Brazil, Germany and the Netherlands, all of which ended with his side’s clean sheet still intact.
The report states the Reds defender would ‘almost certainly’ have been on the plane to Russia last summer had he not suffered an ankle injury in the latter part of the season.

Gomez has started the 2017/18 campaign very strongly with two assured performances alongside Virgil van Dijk, staking his claim for a long-term starting role.
Southgate was in attendance on Monday night when the 21-year-old starred against Crystal Palace.
Gomez, then, is set to be called-up for the Nations League clash with Spain at Wembley on September 8 and the friendly against Switzerland on September 11.
Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also likely to figure after making the 23-man World Cup squad, but Adam Lallana may be left out after a lack of fitness limited him to a place on the standby list for the tournament.
