Alisson Will Face Napoli in Liverpool Debut

Fans don’t have long to wait to see the club’s new goalkeeper in action.

With just ten days to go until the Premier League season kicks off there isn’t much left of pre-season for Liverpool, and that means that the players who returned to training this week following their post-World Cup breaks will have to get up to speed quickly.

Both Roberto Firmino and Trent Alexander-Arnold re-joined the team on Monday, and both are expected to play against Napoli on Saturday. But perhaps more exciting for Liverpool fans is news that new goalkeeper signing Alisson is expected to make his debut.

“We should not waste time,” manager Jürgen Klopp told the club’s official website when asked about the need to get his new number one up to speed ahead of the 2018-19 season. “It’ll be nearly a week, or six days in training and yes, he will play.

“It’s very important he can start now because the season starts in one-and-a-half weeks. Each player in the world needs training and time to adapt to his mates [and] we have two games to do that before we start, so it’s really good.”

Barring something unexpected, then, Alisson will play—and he may even start on Saturday. If he doesn’t, then Liverpool’s final pre-season game against Torino on Tuesday will almost certainly see the goalkeeper given a full 90 minutes with his new teammates.

“He obviously has a real presence,” Klopp added “He’s smart, he’s very nice, and it’s good to have him around. It’s only positive, even the performances in training—which is not too important in the beginning—are already exceptional, so all good.”
