Fabinho adapting to Liverpool’s style

Fabinho is still waiting for his first competitive appearance for Liverpool, but he feels he’s already adapted to the style of play required by Jurgen Klopp.

Our new number three was left on the bench for Sunday’s opening 4-0 against West Ham after suffering a minor injury in pre-season, but prior to that was involved in all nine of Liverpool’s summer friendlies as Klopp sought to acclimatize the Brazilian into the squad as fast as possible. And Fabinho is confident that he’s adaptingwell  to life at Anfield.

“I think my performances have been good,” he said. “It’s a different playing style than at Monaco; there were two of us in midfield there and here at Liverpool there’s three.

“My midfield partners have given me guidance and assistance, as have the defence. I knew [my role] would change and I feel I’ve adapted well. You seek guidance and help from the players around you and that has worked really well up until now.”

Fabinho was well-aware of the stiff competition he would face in Liverpool’s midfield when signing his contract with the Merseyside giants, with Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Gini Wijnaldum and fellow new signing Naby Keita all currently battling for a place.

“When I came to Liverpool I knew this competition would exist in midfield and I think it’s really good for the team. If anything happens to a player, there’s adequate cover. During pre-season I played alongside a variety of different players and we blended really well. So, overall, I think it’s a good thing for the team.”

Fabinho has spent a full summer with the Reds after becoming a surprise signing just days after the Champions League Final and has been heavily involved in Klopp’s rigorous training regimes and friendlies at home and abroad, but the 24-year-old has taken it all in his stride so far.

“It has been really good since I arrived here,” he said.

“The players and the coaching staff have been brilliant. I have been able to fit in really well with the club, the training and games we’ve played have been good.”

Fabinho may get his first taste of competitive action for Liverpool when they take on Crystal Palace on Monday night.
