Kevin De Bruyne Talks Liverpool’s Summer Business

The Manchester City midfielder gives a nod to Liverpool’s strength after a summer of hearty transfers.

There was a lot of disingenuous talk in various media about Liverpool’s spending over the summer. Jürgen Klopp brought in Alisson, Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabinho, and Naby Keita, ridding the club of over £170million. It’s was a lot of money to spend, but, considering it was only a only a year ago when Manchester United and Manchester City opened their own coffers and dropped nearly £140million a piece, it’s safe to say that opposition ire is misplaced. This summer it was finally Liverpool’s moment to pay big money for big players and it might be time to get used to that new reality.

It’s easy to see that Liverpool had a plan in the transfer window and funds to deal in an increasingly steep market. There were no frivolous signings or panic buys. All the new players strengthen the team and give Klopp an excellent chance at winning the Premier League title from Manchester City this season.

City’s Kevin De Bruyne was a major contributor to his club’s impressive title-winning season and the Belgian midfielder has been noticing the good work happening at Anfield over the summer. De Bruyne told the BBC he’s given Liverpool’s business the once-over and he likes what he sees.

“The main focus is on us (Manchester City),” said De Bruyne. “The other teams are always going to push us, Liverpool did what we did last year. They have spent a lot of money but wisely.

“They needed some additions and they have got them in the right places. They saw that they had to up the level to come closer to us and we are trying to maintain what we have done last year. It will be a good battle between the top sides.

”The top six is always challenging. I don’t make a difference between any team. Liverpool spent the most this year, but last year it was us and Manchester United.

“Now there are other teams in the Premier League who spend more than us, they have to do what they have to do to be better.”
