Klopp: ‘I have never wanted to have the best team’
Jurgen Klopp feels Liverpool can thrive as an underdog, even if they do not have the best team in the Premier League on paper.
The Reds have set their sights on a first Premier League crown this season but will have to bridge a significant gap to last year’s runaway champions Manchester City.
Klopp simply aspires to beat Pep Guardiola’s side, not to assemble a better squad.
“If a team is better than yours, sort yourself out to get up to their standard and beat them,” he said.
“I have never wanted to have the best team. I have never been part of that myself, as a player or manager.

“What I’m interested in is beating the best. The best team today in England is Manchester City — that means all the others aren’t the best. The aim is to beat City as often as possible.”
The German, who has seen his team lose three finals since he arrived at Anfield in 2015, is under no illusions as to the extent of the task.
“Liverpool’s history is made up of battles,” he said. “And when you battle, you never expect it to be easy. Why would it be now? Yes, we’re aiming for the stars, but we respect the game.”
