Liverpool Will Reportedly Allow Ragnar Klavan to Depart Club

Jürgen Klopp will let the veteran centre half leave if an appropriate deal comes in.

On deadline day, news that a deal to sen Ragnar Klavan to Newcastle United had fallen through came as a surprise to Liverpool fans given that up until that point there had been no suggestion the veteran centre half could be sold.

Since then, with Joël Matip, Dejan Lovren, and Joe Gomez all dealing with various injury issues—the first two remain sidelined while Gomez was fit to face West Ham on Sunday—it had seemed rather fortuitous Klavan hadn’t been sold.

Now, though, multiple sources with ties to the club are claiming that despite the club’s ucertain depth situation at centre half, Klavan’s aborted deadline day deal isn’t the end of the story and the 32-year-old could be on his way out.

Gomez, Lovren, and Matip may all have had injury issues over the past year, but with Gomez impressing on the weekend, Lovren expected to be out no more than a month, and Matip in training again there seems little need of Klavan.

Or at least that’s the story the club are putting out via connected journalists, who claim the player wants a better shot at playing time and Jürgen Klopp believes he has enough options to make it through the season without the Estonian.

For now, through August and September with the season young and the matches relatively few and far between, it’s likely his departure won’t be a problem. Last season, though, Klavan was needed as the season wore on.

Klopp, though, has never been a manager to keep players around if they’re determined to leave, and hopefully if Klavan is it won’t come back to haunt the manager when Liverpool head into the busy holiday stretch and new year.
