‘Newcastle failed in Deadline Day Klavan move’

Newcastle tried to sign Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan on Deadline Day, only for talks to ‘hit a brick wall’, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.

Former Reds boss Rafael Benitez was in the market for a centre-back after Florian Lejeune suffered ligament damage.

Klavan was identified as a potential option and the Magpies open negotiations with the club, to no avail.

It is unclear why Liverpool rejected the approach. Newcastle may have been unwilling to meet their asking price, or perhaps Jurgen Klopp was concerned that losing Klavan would mean defensive cover was scarce.

The experienced Estonian is set to provide back-up to regular pairing Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren this season.

Klavan’s contract expires at the end of the season so he could leave the club on a Bosman transfer next summer, but it was reported in April that Klopp is keen to tie him down to a new deal.
