Southampton Pushing to Get Ings Deal Through After Transfer Window Closes
The window is closed, but Saints may be granted an extension to get the deal done.
With the transfer window slamming shut for Premier League sides at 5PM BST this afternoon, it looked as though Danny Ings would be stuck with Liverpool for the coming season. However, a deal to take him to Southampton may not be dead just yet.
According to The Southern Daily Echo, Saints have submitted paperwork hoping to be granted an extension that would allow them to complete a deal for Ings, but it is unclear at this point if it was put through in time or if the extension will be granted.
Clubs that have deals in the works when the window closes can be granted extensions to finish those deals in the hours immediately following, and for the sake of Ings, Liverpool, and Southampton the hope will now be that a deal remains possible.
Liverpool had been holding out for a £20M fee for the 26-year-old, oft-injured striker that had already pushed Crystal Palace to bring in Jordan Ayew instead, and that left Liverpool and Southampton in something of a staring contest to see who blinked first.
It appears, just maybe, that Southampton blinked in time to pay a fee Liverpool would accept and get the deal done. Alternately, they blinked too late and Ings will remain at Anfield for the coming season.
