Boothroyd: Solanke needs more opportunities
Dominic Solanke should be given more of a chance to shine at club level, according to his England U21 boss Aidy Boothroyd.
Solanke secured a move to Liverpool off the back of the 2017 U20 World Cup, having earned the Golden Ball with his starring performances.
However, he failed to make much of an impression during his first season at Anfield, restricted to just five starts across all competitions.
The outlook for this season is no more positive, with Solanke yet to make Jurgen Klopp’s matchday squad.
Boothroyd expressed a fear that Solanke, currently preparing for the next round of U21 European Championship qualifiers, will be unable to reach his potential if his gametime is limited.
“I’m really pleased with Dom but I’m also a little bit worried about him because he is not getting the minutes and not getting the games,” he admitted.

“I am happy on the pitch picking the best players, but for the good of England and for the good of British football it would be nicer if we had more players playing, certainly better for us and for them.
“Our players have proved they can do it at international level but not as many of them as there should be are getting the opportunity to do that in the Premier League.”
Solanke was expected to enter the season as Roberto Firmino’s deputy, but Daniel Sturridge’s revival and Divock Origi’s failure to secure a move away have nudged him further down the pecking order.
