James Milner pleased with results, but believes performances need to improve

James Milner is pleased with the results that have ultimately led Liverpool to top of the Premier League table at this point, but he wants to see improvement in performances.

Liverpool were scratchy yesterday against Leicester City, and with the exception of the opening game against West Ham United, the Reds have not looked convincing.

Milner wants to see improvement in performance, but he is thrilled with the fact the side are finding ways to get all three points come the end, despite not playing to the best of their ability.

“[We’re in] As good a position as you could be in after four games obviously, winning them all, but like I said it’s a long season, a long way to go and there’s plenty we can improve on,” Milner told Sky Sports.

“We’ve seen that over the last few games, but it’s pleasing how we defended, pleasing how we’ve fought and got those results.

“There’s a lot more to come from this team, I think we know that, but it’s early days in the season.

“I don’t think anyone’s hit top gear yet so it’s important that we know where we are and where we can improve and where we can hopefully get to.

“It wasn’t a good performance from us in most aspects, really – pressing, defending, keeping the ball. It was tough work.

“But that’s not taking anything away from them, they’re a good team and they showed that. We knew it’d be tough but sometimes you have to win ugly and we did that today.

“[There is] plenty to improve on again and we need to improve after the international break.

“Hopefully everyone comes back fully fit, but again if you’re winning games and you’re not happy with the performances, that’s where you need to be.

“I think you can see the way we know we can play, and the way we’ve played the last couple of games is just finding a way to get that result when things aren’t going for you. That’s what you have to do sometimes in the Premier League.”

Liverpool’s next task after the international break is an in-form Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium.
