Jurgen Klopp reflects on victory against Southampton

Liverpool are now seven wins from seven games in all competitions this season after dismantling Southampton 3-0 yesterday at Anfield.

The Reds have found different ways to win regardless of the challenge thrown at them, and that is what has pleased Jurgen Klopp the most.

“I lost seven games in a row once, that felt different!” said Klopp, as quoted by The Liverpool Echo.

“But then we won game No.8 5-0, very cool!

“It’s a surprise, but all the performances we showed so far were good enough to win the games. Different challenges, different styles of opponent, the boys were there, really in the situation and in the game.

“That’s good, but the next one is coming! Coming on Wednesday then Saturday then Wednesday again, and then the period ends with a nice game against Man City.

“It will be tough, but for all of us. I am really sure we are mature enough to understand it.”

Klopp’s ability to rotate cleverly was on display yesterday again, as changes were made without breaking up the sides momentum.

“Making six or seven changes was never an option. We had to go through that game,” said Klopp.

“That’s why I said it was the most important game. You all told me these were very tough weeks but nobody spoke about Southampton much.

“It’s a good sign what the team gave. Scoring three, making set-pieces a proper threat is cool, because they always help. Defensively it was just good, all three centre-halves played fantastic, both full backs played really well. Another deserved three points.

“All round, it was absolutely a good performance. Very controlled in the second half, exactly as it should be.”

Liverpool have been far from their best to begin the season, and the same could be said about yesterday. Despite this being the case, Liverpool are making football look very simple at this moment.

“It was good,” said Klopp. “But you saw, it needed to be good because Southampton were not bad. They played good football.

“I had an idea and it didn’t work out 100%. We changed system to bring Shaq (Xherdan Shaqiri) in a comfortable position, and wanted to make it a bit more difficult for Southampton to be really prepared for what we do.

“We expected that the two tall boys in the centre would play, so I thought I’d bring in Mo there.

“Offensively it was really good. Defensively we obviously were not used to it. We had a session yesterday but that session was very strange because we couldn’t really go out because of the bad weather.

“We would run out, 30 minutes, set-pieces included which was really important. We did that, it obviously helped because all three goals were around set-pieces!”
