Lallana returns to Liverpool after England training injury

Adam Lallana has left the England camp and returned to Melwood after suffering a groin strain in training on Tuesday morning.

Lallana, returning to the fold after failing to make the final World Cup squad due to a lack of match fitness, pulled up and was forced to leave the session early for assessment by the medical staff.

The injury has ruled him out of Saturday’s game against Spain and the meeting with Switzerland three days later.

Lallana will now undergo treatment at Liverpool but his chances of being involved in a crucial run of fixtures this month have taken a significant hit.

Club team-mates Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson were also called up by Gareth Southgate and are in contention to start against the Spaniards.

Dominic Solanke is set to feature for the U21s as they continue their bid to qualify for the European Championships, but he trained with the senior players on Tuesday to boost the numbers.
