Liverpool Fans Bring Support For Grenfell Tower Victims

We know a thing or two about finding justice for neglect.

If you’re reading this site, chances are that you’re a Liverpool fan. And the chances are even higher that you’re aware of Liverpool’s history, including the loss of life and fight for justice surrounding the Hillsborough disaster. An event indelibly marked in Liverpool’s history and the lives of it’s fans, and still ongoing nearly 30 years later.

While not linked with sports, London has their own tragedy on their hands to fight. In June of 2017, 72 people lost their lives and even more lost their homes when the Grenfell Tower went up in flames, due in part to shoddy sprinkler systems and out of code building materials. A public inquiry is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire, but as over a year has passed, the story has all but disappeared from the public conversation.

Until Saturday’s match when Liverpool traveled to London to visit Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea fans used their typical repertoire of anti-Liverpool songs when the Reds came to town, as expected. Liverpool fans, on the other hand, unfurled a banner declaring “Justice For Grenfell” on their side of the stadium to show their support for survivors, family members, deceased, and anyone campaigning for justice for those who lost everything in that fire.

The official Justice For Grenfell campaign tweeted a picture, as well as Liverpool supporters group Spion Kop 1906, praising the effort of Scousers to show their support.

The inquiry is of course ongoing so any other comments online is forbidden, but the show of support from Reds fans is the perfect sign, even despite the bitter and somewhat new rivalry between our clubs.
