Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Consider €40M Alex Telles Deal
The Reds are said to be keeping a close eye on Porto’s 25-year-old left back.
Over the past few seasons, first at Galatasaray and then FC Porto, Brazilian left back Alex Telles has been linked with moves to Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Chelsea. Those regular rumours of a big money move, though, so far haven’t amounted to anything.
Undeterred, Portuguese rumour mongers have gone and added Liverpool to the list of clubs supposedly interested in Telles, now 25 and in his second year at Porto, and Liverpool scouts are said to have regularly attended matches to watch him this season.
It isn’t just Telles they’re tracking—midfielders Danilo and Hector Herrera are also meant to be on the Reds’ scouting lists—but it’s Telles who’s meant to be the big target, and Liverpool might even be willing to trigger his €40M release clause in January.
Or at least that’s the rumour, and it’s probably best to keep in mind that the Portuguese press has a genuinely dreadful track record when it comes to claiming Liverpool are ready to trigger the inflated release clause of some Primeira Liga player or other.
On the other hand, while his €40M release clause seems excessive and it’s difficult to imagine Liverpool triggering it in January, Telles is a talent and with Alberto Moreno’s contract expiring next summer the Reds may well be watching a number of left backs.
The Portuguese press may be highly unreliable, but it’s not beyond the real of possibility Liverpool would be keeping a close eye on Telles this season—along with other potential left back targets—as a potential signing for next summer.
