Liverpool’s Defense Is Pleased with Start to Season

The Reds have only allowed one goal in four games.

We’ve talked about the only goal that Liverpool has allowed this season. We’ve all talked about it. There are plenty of people who see it as a point of concern for how Liverpool’s season is shaping up. And then there are the rest of us who are perfectly fine with Alisson taking a bit of a knock to his (over-)confidence, especially when the Reds still walked away from King Power Stadium with three points.

Liverpool’s defense are largely in agreement with that assessment.

“We need to be on our toes, be ready, and it’s good that we are,” Virgil van Dijk said after the game. “We had moments that we needed to do much better, but we should be pleased with the win.

“We should not be pleased with the way, at times, we played,” he added. “We should’ve done much better and made it a bit easier for ourselves, but overall some of the players today have been outstanding and we got the win, so we’re happy.”

Van Dijk’s pass back to Alisson set off the chain of events that led to Rachid Ghezzal’s goal on Saturday, but apart from that, the Dutch international had another solid performance.

Man of the match, Joe Gomez, pointed to Liverpool’s performance after the goal as a point of pride.

”As a team we play for clean sheets, that is important and it’s the foundation for you because if they don’t score you can’t lose,” Gomez said. “It’s going to happen though, we’re bound to concede goals but the main thing is the reaction. We didn’t drop our heads and we knew we could withstand the pressure and that is the main thing. We’ll take the three points over the clean sheet.”

“It’s all about getting results,” he added. “We’re not always going to have the best performances but we’ll take the result every day of the week. I think there were times last season when we might not have seen games out and we want to try and correct that this year. These could be valuable points come the end of the season.”

Liverpool remain at the top of the table at the end of the weekend. Even if their performance wasn’t perfect, it’s still a pretty good start to the season.
