Lovren may not return until late October

Dejan Lovren may have to wait until the latter part of October to return to action as Liverpool’s medical staff exercise caution, David Lynch of the Evening Standard reports.

Lovren has been sidelined by a pelvic problem, which he has had since the World Cup in the summer, during the first phase of the campaign.

In his absence, Joe Gomez has impressed alongside Virgil van Dijk and, potentially, leapfrogged him in the pecking order.

Lovren is very much on the road to recovery, having reportedly resumed running and ball work at Melwood.

He could be back in full training with the rest of the squad before the end of September.

However, Lynch says that any minutes before the next international break, which follows Liverpool’s meeting with title rivals Manchester City on October 7, would be viewed as a ‘bonus’.

With Gomez in excellent form and Joel Matip ready to step in if required, the club do not see a need to rush the Croatian back into action.

Lovren, then, may not be back in starting contention until the trip to Huddersfield on October 20, or the home Champions League tie against Red Star Belgrade four days later.
