Minor injury forces Mignolet to leave Belgium camp

Simon Mignolet has become the second Liverpool player to prematurely return to Melwood after picking up an injury on international duty.

After Adam Lallana’s hopes of returning to the England side were dashed by a groin injury in training on Tuesday, goalkeeper Mignolet has been forced to withdraw from the Belgian squad.

Mignolet, generally second choice for Roberto Martinez’s side, may have been hopeful of game time in Friday’s Nations League trip to Scotland.

Fortunately, it appears that the issue is only minor, with the club confident he will recover in time for the visit to Spurs a week on Saturday.

After Loris Karius joined Besiktas on loan, Liverpool chose to retain Mignolet to provide experienced back-up for new arrival Alisson Becker.

If Mignolet’s injury proves to be more serious than expected, either Kamil Grabara or Caoimhin Kelleher, both 19-year-olds, will claim the spot on the bench.

Mignolet will join the likes of James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne, Alberto Moreno and Divock Origi at the club’s training complex, where preparations for the clash with Spurs will soon get underway.
