Neville tips Gomez to thrive in England set-up

Gary Neville has tipped Joe Gomez to force his way into England’s starting line-up after his ‘brilliant’ start to the season.

Gomez has been one of Liverpool’s outstanding performers so far, having formed a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

He has helped his table-topping side to three clean sheets in four games.

Neville says he has been really impressed by the 21-year-old’s displays and insisted that he has not been reliant on the assistance of Van Dijk, regarded as one of the best defenders in the division.

“The one player coming into the [England] set up who I’m interested to see is Joe Gomez,” the Sky Sports pundit wrote.

“I think he’s started the season brilliantly and deserves the call-up.

“You look at how he’s fitted in and not only slotted in to cover alongside Virgil van Dijk but stood up alongside him, he’s done really, really well.”

Gomez is set to feature as one of Southgate’s three centre-halves, a system Neville reckons will suit him perfectly.

“The majority of the lads from the summer are there so there’s not much to suggest that changes are required, but Gomez is the one who could come in and really press his case.

“Gareth Southgate played three at the back at the World Cup and Gomez looks ideal to play in that system with his mobility and experience of playing in different positions.”

Gomez, who missed the World Cup through injury, will be eager to impress Southgate in England’s games against Spain and Switzerland in the coming days.
