Jürgen Klopp Admits Liverpool “Felt a Bit Average” Against Huddersfield

Liverpool are mostly getting the right results—but the manager and team know they can play better than they have so far.

For some, that Liverpool have been getting mostly positive results is enough. For others, that they have yet to look especially convincing along the way—at least compared to times last season when they were at their best—is a concern, good results or no.

You can count manager Jürgen Klopp in the latter group—and his players as well. While they’re certainly happy with the points they’ve earned and the platform it gives them for the remainder of the season, they know that they can and must play better.

“In the last game I was not the only one who felt a bit average,” Klopp said, speaking to the press ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie against Red Star Belgrade. “In my case it was influenced by the three big counters we had and did not finish.

“If we finish one then it’s done, but we didn’t and then they had a half chance. So I didn’t feel so good after the game, but you must make yourself ready for all the problems that you have, face them, solve them, and try to win the football game.”

If they can get fully on track, though, nobody will much remember these early struggles to find their best form. Not when they have been tallying up positive results and sit level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Last season, after all, they had periods of struggle. And the season before that and the season before that. In the end, the important thing is to earn results while you’re not at your best—as long, at least, as you eventually do get back to your best.

“The first job we have to do is win football games,” Klopp added. “Nobody remembers the average games from last season. So now we have to perform, we have to fight and do the right things in the right moment.”
