Liverpool Determined to “Keep Making Steps” After Impressive Red Star Win

Joe Gomez says the Reds’ convincing victory over Red Star was a step in the right direction. Next up, Cardiff.

With Liverpool not just keeping last season’s impressive attacking group together over the summer but adding to it, expectations for fluid, attacking football were high heading into the season. Those expectations haven’t always been met.

The results have mostly been there, but some of the performances haven’t looked quite up to standard—passing a little off, finishing not quite sharp. That fluidity that was a hallmark of Liverpool last season has been, well, a little bit missing.

Then, Liverpool scored their first goal against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday evening and, at least for one game, that fluidity was back. It was an encouraging thing to see for the fans, and it was encouraging for the players on the pitch, too.

“It was good when we got the first goal,” said Joe Gomez “It gets a bit more fluid and that’s what we’re capable of as a team. We’ve got so many talented players on the ball and if you give them the chance to play, things will happen.”

After a start to the season where Liverpool have earned the right results if not some of the plaudits of last year, against Red Star they showed the patience on the ball manager Jürgen Klopp has been demanding of them and it paid off.

Increasingly, as the game wore on things happened. Good things. Passing moves and neat interchanges and taken chances. Now, the goal will be to continue that in the next game, with the Reds set to take on Cardiff City on Saturday.

“It’s always nice to get a solid result with some good goals and a clean sheet,” Gomez added. “It was important that we got some more points on the board for the group and we’ve just got to continue it now and keep making steps.

“We knew at times we’d have a lot of possession and would have to try to break them down. It’s about being patient, not getting bored of passing, and Jürgen made sure he emphasised that to us.”
