Liverpool Reportedly Hope to Sell Divock Origi for £20M in January

There’s a lot of interest in Origi ahead of the January transfer window. Hopefully it doesn’t end with him stuck at Liverpool.

When the transfer window closed with Divock Origi still at Liverpool, it looked to be the worst outcome for both club and player, as Origi seemed fated to be stuck in the reserves at the age of 23 and the club failed to recoup some of their summer spend.

Two months into the season now, things have gone about as expected. Origi hasn’t even made a matchday squad this season and sits fourth on the striker depth chart, confirming that not accepting the option of moving to Wolves in the summer was a mistake.

That mistake could be corrected in January according to The Liverpool Echo, who claim Wolves—the one side that were willing to match the club’s £20M-plus valuation of Origi—remain very interested in the Belgian striker and intend to move for him again.

What happens next, then, will be up to Origi. If playing time and a chance to re-build his once promising career is the priority, a move to Wolves appears to be there for him. There could also be other potential suitors for him, though—for better or for worse.

This month there have been rumours out of Turkey claiming Galatasaray have Origi as their top target and want him in January, which could give the player options. Though if they are interested, there will be concerns about them being able to match his price.

There are even rumours that Everton, too, could be looking at Origi—though a player transferring from Liverpool to Everton seems almost unthinkable. Still, it does appear that there’s real interest out there in Origi as a January signing from multiple clubs.

And if Wolves and Galatasaray and Everton aren’t enough, Newcastle are also said to be looking at the striker—though perhaps unsurprisingly given it’s Newcastle, they’re said to be unable or unwilling to pay a transfer fee and would want him on a loan deal.

All of which could, potentially, lead to a situation like in the summer where Origi’s preferred destination won’t—or can’t—pay the fee Liverpool are demanding and Origi doesn’t want to go to the club that can pay so he ends up not playing for another six months.
