Trent Alexander-Arnold Happy At Right Back

The young fullback is glad to have meaningful playing time for Liverpool anywhere on the pitch.

Trent Alexander-Arnold came through the ranks of the Liverpool academy as a central midfielder. But when the opportunity came to get first-team minutes at right back, Alexander-Arnold not only impressed, but effectively nailed-down the position as his own.

He’s been so impressive, in fact, that it’s hard to see a way back for veteran right back and former England international Nathaniel Clyne. And despite his earlier training as a midfielder, he is quite content to continue playing an important role at fullback for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

“That’s my position, and if it’s that for the rest of my career then I’ll be more than happy to do that,” Alexander-Arnold told ESPN in an interview.

“It’s not important to me where I’m playing, just as long as the manager is happy and trusting me to go out on the pitch. That’s all that really matters to me -- playing for the club.

“I think I’m more comfortable than when I first came up as a shy, nervous lad.

“But I think it’s important to not get too comfortable because there’s always people that want your position and someone who is hungry and wants to take it off you.”

TAA came on strong in the second half of last season, especially during the Champions League run to the final. He earned a surprise inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad, and has started this season as an integral squad member.

So far this season, he’s only missed two matches: the League Cup clash against Chelsea, and the Premier League showdown against Manchester City, where he was replaced by the more defensively-minded (and equally impressive young player) Joe Gomez.

As one of the few players to make it through international break unscathed, TAA can expect a start against Huddersfield when hostilities renew on Saturday evening.
