Liverpool to Offer Red Star Away Seats to Young Reds Fans

With Red Star Belgrade barred from selling their away allotment, Anfield will be 99% red on Wednesday.

With Red Star supporters banned from their first two Champions League away dates this season following sanction for a pitch invasion during their qualifying playoff, there was a question as to what Liverpool would do with the usual away ticket allotment.

The club answered it today when they announced that much of what would be the away area will be sectioned off and sold to season ticket holders and club members between the ages of 17-21 as part of an effort to give younger fans the ability to attend more matches.

“Engaging young fans and giving them the chance to come to Anfield has been a priority for us in recent seasons,” read a club statement from CEO Peter Moore. “The fact that we have the away allocation to use for home supporters is a unique opportunity.

“We wanted to find a way for young fans to benefit from this additional allocation. We all know how special European nights are at Anfield so we’re delighted to make some of these tickets available to young supporters who may be experiencing it for their first time.”

Despite the ban on Red Star selling away tickets for Wednesday’s group stage match, the expectation is that some of the Serbian club’s supporters will still travel to Liverpool ahead of the match and attempt to acquire tickets to the match through other means.

While a small smattering of their fans may make it in, Wednesday promises an unusual experience—a Champions League night with 99% of the stadium filled by home supporters—and a chance for some of the club’s younger supporters to witness it live.
