Mohamed Salah Scores From a Corner, Goes Off Injured For Egypt

The early hope is that the substitution was precautionary.

Mohamed Salah was back in his home country for international duty, trying to help Egypt qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, slated to kick off in the summer of 2019. The Pharaohs hosted Swaziland, and as expected, there was only one winner on the night. The hosts trotted out 4-1 winners, conceding the consolation goal in the 85th minute of the tie.

Equally unsurprising is that Liverpool’s Mo Salah was a standout player on the night, looking the best player on the pitch by a comfortable distance. However, the Ballon d’Or fan favorite didn’t find his scoring boots until the last minute of the first half, but it was worth the wait. With Egypt already up 3-0, Salah took a corner and curled it perfectly into the near post. It’s probably not a goal he’d get away with in the Premier League, but a great strike nonetheless.

Salah ruffled the side netting twice more on the night, including on a free kick, and probably should have had a couple of assists as well.

It’s not all good news. It can never been all good news when Liverpool aren’t playing. But actually potentially bad news: Salah was hooked in the 88th minute after an apparent muscle strain. Early rumors is that it’s “precautionary” and hopefully more of an “injury” than an injury.

Salah and The Pharaohs head down to Swaziland in the reverse fixture, where hopefully his services will not be necessary. Egypt and Tunisia sit joint-top in the four-team group with six points each (albeit with Tunisia having a game in hand), with the top two spots advancing to the Africa Cup of Nations finals. Swaziland and Niger are last with a point each.
