Liverpool’s Kamil Grabara Believes He Can Reach Alisson’s Level

To make it as a footballer you need self-belief, and Grabara certainly has that.

Liverpool have one £65M goalkeeper on their hands in Alisson Becker, the Brazilian star widely regarded as one of the game’s best shot stoppers. And they could have a second who’s worth that much. At least according to Kamil Grabara.

While the 19-year-old Polish goalkeeper knows he doesn’t have Alisson’s experience or track record just yet, he does believe that he has what it takes, technically at least, to measure up to a player who’s on the shortlist for the 2018 Ballon d’Or.

“If I say what I want to, people will tell me that I mistook the floor for the ceiling,” Grabara said to Wirtualna Polska while on duty with the Polish U21s this week when asked about the experience of training every day at Liverpool with a player like Alisson.

“But I will say, I really do not see a great difference. Your level is determined by the details, and experience is one of the most important. I will not bet about where I will be in this or that time. All that is left is hard work and waiting for it to pay off.”

Comparing himself to a player who, for a short time last summer at least, was the most expensive goalkeeper in the world might seem like a stretch to say the least. Still, Grabara does seem aware that he’s not quite at that level. Not just yet.

And one imagines that there are very few players who reach the level that Alisson has in the game without a strong belief first that they can reach it if they only work hard enough and get the chance to show their quality somewhere along the way.

For a young player, it’s good to have that self-belief—while still knowing they’ll have to put in an awful lot of work if they ever want people not to think they’re mistaking the floor for the ceiling by comparing themselves to one of the game’s best.
