Watch: Trent Alexander-Arnold Scores First England Goal

The teenager opened his account against the US on Thursday night.
During these wretched weeks of the year when the Premier League is suspended so international games can take place, most committed Liverpool fans spend their time making the appropriate ritual sacrifices to the football gods in order to ensure the safe and healthy return of their players. The results matter not one iota, and while it is nice if the players in question have success on the pitch, most of the time, we’d be fine with those wonderful lads not risking their prized legs out on the grass at all.
Still, even the most jaded of us can find room for shared joy in our collective cynicism should the appropriate situation arrive, and when a 20-year old local lad who has been with the club since the age of six gets his first international goal, well that’s just about as appropriate as it gets.
In the 27th minute of England’s breezy 3-0 win over the USMNT, Trent Alexander-Arnold arrived in the visitors’ box from his advanced right fullback position just as an attacking move looked to have broken down, pouncing on a short Jadon Sancho pass and arrowing a first-time finish from a narrow angle into the far corner past a helpless Brad Guzan. It may just be a friendly and the result won’t matter in the grand scheme of football things, but the youngster’s celebration revealed no detachment from the mirth of the moment.
Now, just make sure you get home safe and sound, sweetie.
