Anthony Taylor appointed referee of Liverpool’s tie at the Etihad

Manchester-born Anthony Taylor has been appointed as the referee of Liverpool’s trip to Manchester City on Thursday evening.

With the Reds chasing their first Premier League title and City having the chance to close the gap to four points at the top, the stage is set for a fiery encounter in Manchester.

The smallest of details could decide the game, and some fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment in the Premier League’s decision in appointing someone with a potential bias in such a crucial fixture.

Taylor is reported as supporting non-league side Altrincham, so should have no bias for either side.

He does have at least a brief history with Liverpool, however, having made some controversial decisions during the Reds’ clash with Sunderland back in 2017, that left Jurgen Klopp ranting about the officiating post match.

Taylor has also made headlines just prior to the New Year for brandishing six yellows and two reds in the Championship tie between Sheffield United and Blackburn, with both sets of staff frustrated with the officiating.
