Carragher doesn’t expect Liverpool to walkover Everton

Jamie Carragher believes Everton will provide a challenge for Liverpool in today’s Merseyside derby at Anfield.

The Reds enter the clash unbeaten in the Premier League, and having also not lost a derby at home since 1999.

Everton are an improved team this season under Marco Silva, which Carragher has identified as a key reason why Jurgen Klopp’s men should be preparing to face a new-look Toffees side compared to recent times.

“I don’t think Everton will just be sitting back, I think if you look at their games this season, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, they obviously haven’t picked up any points yet but I think the performances have given a lift to Everton supporters,” Carragher told the Liverpool Echo.

“I think for years now, notoriously, going back 10 or 15 years they have really struggled in those big games against the top sides in the country.

“So yes they haven’t got points but there has been something in the performance that bodes well for the future and they will be looking for something similar, but obviously with a better result.

“I think with Everton coming across there…is it the law of averages where one day something will happen?

“But there’s no doubt over that time Everton have had some good sides, maybe even better than the one Marco Silva has now, some really good David Moyes sides but they haven’t found a way to win that game.

“There’s plenty of draws there, it wasn’t always Liverpool winning. I played in plenty of them but I’m expecting a really tough game, it certainly won’t be a walkover for Liverpool.”
