Jurgen Klopp knew what he was getting long before he signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January.

The centre-back has had an enormous impact on Liverpool’s defence, which has only conceded five goals in the Premier League this season.

Klopp was under the impression that he knew the Dutchman would help decrease the amount of goals the Reds were conceding if he could get his man, which is why he was happy to splash out £75 million on the defender.

“From the first second, he was brilliant,” Klopp told reporters.

“I knew long before he signed the contract that Virgil would be outstanding as a player. His mix of both playing ability and leadership quality makes him outstanding.”
