Virgil van Dijk Can’t Wait for Everton

It’s the fixture that established him as an Anfield favourite.

FA Cup. Everton. Winner. That’s how Virgil van Dijk made one of the most memorable debuts in recent times for Liverpool.

“It is still one of the best moments of my career”, Van Dijk tells the Daily Mail. “I made my debut for such a big club. It was a massive week for me anyway so to make my debut and score the winner was fantastic.

“Being a football player you know all about the derbies. You see the games on television. I was prepared. To see it actually happen and to score the winner and the reaction after that was amazing.”

And it’s been all positive ever since. Speaking of his Liverpool career, the Dutch centre back adds that “I have developed a lot.

“I have been working very hard with everyone at Liverpool but it is just about keeping going. I am far away from where I want to be.

“I need to improve on everything. If you saw on Thursday, there are things to improve. That will always be the case. At 27, I am at an age where I can still improve. And I will.

“At the end of the season we hope to achieve a lot of things. We will see.”

The derby is “right up there” for Van Dijk. “It is very special for all of us, for everyone at Liverpool. It is a massive game. A game that we want to win and we are going to do everything we can to win it.”

It’s almost strange to think that this is a game where 3 points are up for grabs, that a win is a must to keep the pressure on Man City and stay a nose ahead of Spurs. These things almost fade into the background when such a traditional fixture comes along. Get it done.
