Liverpool’s Dominic Solanke Closer To January Loan Move

Last we checked in December, Liverpool were still contemplating the possibility of keeping Dominic Solanke at Melwood past the January transfer window, despite slim odds of the young striker seeing meaningful minutes with the first team over the rest of the season. The club’s stance was likely informed by the crush of year-end of holiday fixtures and the specter of fatigue or injury that tends to haunt this juncture of the campaign.

With Liverpool having completed an imperious march through their December schedule, some of that pressure may have abated. And with that, the club’s inclination to loan Solanke out in January may also have solidified. According to recent reports in the Echo, the club and the player are weighing up various offers on the horizon.

Most of the clubs previously linked with Solanke remain in the frame. Crystal Palace (still dealing with the unavailability of Christian Benteke) and Huddersfield Town (currently the Premiership’s lowest scoring side) could both use reinforcements at the striker position. But Brighton and Fulham are both reportedly interested as well, with Chris Hughton’s club interested in a permanent deal (which Liverpool are unlikely to contemplate). The priority for Klopp and Solanke will be a club that actually intends to use the player.

Despite making a solid impression during the preseason preparations, Solanke has not made a first team appearance for Liverpool this season, and has to struggle through injury issues on top of that. With Liverpool’s attacking threats all looking in good shape, coupled with a hungry Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana eager for opportunities, Solanke would really need to find minutes elsewhere, barring some catastrophic developments on Liverpool’s depth chart. The club appear to still value the youngster, so a move in January is looking ever more likely.
