Sadio Mane has claimed that £75million man Virgil Van Dijk has become a bargain for Liverpool following their incredible start to the season.

The Reds sit top of the Premier League at Christmas with a four point gap between them and closest challengers Manchester City, with Newcastle United next to play at Anfield.

Virgil Van Dijk’s arrival has been a big factor in the turn of quality in Liverpool’s defence, which has conceded only seven league goals in the first 18 matches.

Mane says that Van Dijk has had a massive impact on Liverpool since his arrival, and he’s taken the step into the world class bracket with his performances.

“It’s been a big, big impact. We’ve all seen it. Of course at the time he signed people were thinking that the club had over-paid for Virgil.

“But since then everyone has forgotten about the fee because his form has been so good. He’s done such a great job for us back there. I am so happy to have him as a team-mate.

“He’s one of the leaders. You can see it in every single game. He has proved he’s one of the best defenders in the world.”

Next week marks a year to the day that Van Dijk agreed his move to Liverpool, after a sustained period of rumour about where his future would be.

Whilst contributing to the incredible turn of defensive form, Van Dijk also grabbed his first league goal for the Reds this week against Wolves in Liverpool’s 2-0 win at the Molineux.

“I said to Virgil: ‘Finally, you have scored in the Premier League for us!’” Mane added.

“It had been a long time. Everyone is happy for him and he’s such a good player that I’m sure that more goals will follow for him.”
