Liverpool Reject Claims of Done Deal for Abdülkadir Ömür

Those in the know say the Turkish Messi won’t be joining the club now or in the summer.

Over the past month, multiple reports out of Turkey have claimed Liverpool intend to sign 19-year-old Trabzonspor wide-man Abdülkadir Ömür, seen by many as that country’s most promising young talent and dubbed, inevitably, the Turkish Messi.

Those reports culminated in a claim today by multiple Turkish outlets that a €20M deal had been agreed between Liverpool and Trabzonspor that would see Ömür move to England in the summer. However, they further claimed there would be no confirmation.

In order to appease supporters, it was said the deal would be kept under wraps until the summer, allowing Trabzonspor and their fans to focus on pushing for the top three finish in the Super Lig that would qualify them for European competition.

Liverpool fans who have been through transfer silly season a few times would be forgiven for rolling their eyes at claims of such an agreement, and it’s no surprise they were met with an almost instant refutation from club-connected journalists.

According to The Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce, far from there being a deal between the two clubs there have been no discussions between them and Ömür is not a target. There is further suggestion from Pearce that this is the work of an agent.

All told, then, it’s probably safe to file this one away as a saga that never was, and while Ömür might get a move at the end of the season, he won’t be moving to Liverpool any time soon—unless, perhaps, it’s to join Everton.
