Andy Robertson Rejects Your Nervy Narrative

The left back asks if Manchester City were showing nerves in losses to Palace, Leicester, and Newcastle.

Liverpool. A title race. Nerves. Dropped points. Andy Robertson rejects your narrative—the left back simply isn’t interested in it—pointing instead to Manchester City’s dropped points over the past six weeks and the lack of any such talk.

“Did anyone say that when City picked up no points against Palace and Leicester?” was his response when asked if, with two draws in their last two games, the Reds are starting to feel the pressure of the title race. “I don’t think they did.

“It’s no different for us. People talk about pressure because we’ve not been in this position, but it’s February. Nerves aren’t showing in the changing room, it’s just two poor results and poor performances. It happens during a long season.”

Over the last ten games, City have dropped 12 points. Over the same period, Liverpool have dropped seven in the league. The difference, of course, is that as Robertson says, Liverpool haven’t been in this position before—and City have.

Still, as poor as Liverpool looked at times on Monday night against West Ham. And as poor as they looked at times against Leicester and even in their win over Crystal Palace. As poor as they’ve looked, they’re still top of the table.

City will likely go ahead on goal differential mid-week after facing Everton, but that match will give Liverpool a game in hand. They will still control their own destiny. They just have to get back to playing like they were up until the end of December.

“We might look back on it as a good point, but we don’t know that right now,” Robertson added. “We just need to get back to playing the better football we can but it’s nothing to do with nerves.”
