Mo Salah is January’s PFA Premier League Player of the Month
Liverpool’s number 11 has been named the winner for the second time this season
After winning the fan-voted award in December 2018, Mohamed Salah has once again been named the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Premier League Player of the Month for the longest month of the year i.e January.
Salah has proven this season that he is more than just a one season wonder and in October 2018 he brought his Liverpool scoring tally to an incredible 50 goals in 65 appearances and in true Salah form, he also became the fastest player to do so in club history after breaking a 70-year record held by Albert Stubbins who reached 50 goals in 77 appearances.
The month of January saw Salah add three more Premier League goals to his tally, the first one coming against Brighton and Hove Albion at the Falmer Stadium on 12 January 2019 when Salah won and converted a penalty kick, scoring the only goal of the game. Seven days later Mo was at it again, scoring two goals in Liverpool’s match against Crystal Palace at Anfield on 19 January 2019 with his first coming in the 46th minute and the second at 75 minutes in. What made Salah’s two goals against the Eagles more significant was the fact that they took him to a total of 50 Premier League goals overall and having achieved that in only 72 appearances (which includes his two goals in 13 games during his time at Chelsea - 10 appearances in 2013-14 and three appearances in 2014-15) means that there are only three other players who have done so faster than him, namely Andy Cole, Alan Shearer and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
According to Opta, it took Mohamed Salah 5,374 minutes to reach 50 PL goals with 48 of those goals being scored for Liverpool, 41 of them were scored with his left foot and 28 of them were scored at Anfield. Remarkably only four of the aforementioned goals were scored from penalties.
Salah is now only two goals away from scoring 50 Premier League goals for Liverpool and that means that his next achievement is just around the corner.
Salah was nominated for the PFA Premier League Player of the Month along with Manchester United’s David de Gea, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford, Watford’s captain Troy Deeney, and Manchester City’s Leroy Sané. Despite some worthy displays from a few of the other candidates nominated for January’s award, including Rashford and Pogba who either scored or assisted six Premier League goals between them last month and Sané’s two goals and one assist, Salah won the award by a landslide.
Well done Mo!
Up the Mighty Reds!
