The proposed UEFA rule change that would majorly affect Liverpool in Europe next season

It has been proposed that the away goals rule in UEFA’s Europa and Champions League knockout tournaments be scrapped as coaches of top clubs around Europe believe the rule is outdated.

Liverpool have won five European Cups and are one of the most successful clubs on the continent but and have benefitted and suffered from the away goals rule in equal measure.

This season might be the last that the rule is in effect which would have a significant impact on the way teams approach knockout ties.

Giorgio Marchetti, UEFA’s competition director, confirmed that managers believe the rule is outdated as scoring away goals is not as difficult as it once was.

He said: “They [the coaches] think that achieving away goals is not as difficult as in the past.”

Kicker, via the Liverpool Echo, reports that UEFA’s Executive Committee met in Rome on Wednesday to discuss changing the rule but a decision is not expected to be made immediately.
