Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain set to play for the Reds again this week

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will take one step closer to making his comeback for the Liverpool first team later this week.

The attacking midfielder, who has been out with a knee injury since the back end of last season, will play a part in the Liverpool Under-23s match against Derby on Friday as he works towards regaining match fitness.

Oxlade-Chamberlain suffered a damaged cruciate and medial ligaments, as well as injuring his hamstring tendons, during the Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma last April. He was immediately ruled out for the rest of the campaign and was not expected to be available this season.

However, the England international had worked hard over the last few months and is set to return to the fold earlier than anticipated.

“He has been training with the first-team squad for several weeks – “70% of team training then he leaves a bit early to do something else and the things he needs,” Jurgen Klopp revealed last week, according to The Guardian.

The news of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s return will come as a huge boost to his manager and teammates as they seek to maintain their title push for the remaining weeks of the season.
