James Milner: It’s time to win something under Jurgen Klopp

James Milner thinks it’s time for Liverpool to win something under Jurgen Klopp this season after having lost all three finals he’s played in for the Reds.

Milner moved to Anfield in 2015 under Brendan Rodgers and quickly became a fan favourite, earning the vice-captaincy alongside skipper Jordan Henderson.

And now, the Reds’ No.7 is ready to add silverware to the trophy cabinet for his current manager.

“I have been to three finals since I have been here, lost them all and I am desperate to put that right,” said Milner, according to The Telegraph.

“Listen, I have loved every minute of my time at Liverpool but to have not won something when we have given ourselves opportunities is difficult to take at this moment. You know, it’s been so long since we won a league title.

“Even in recent years, Liverpool haven’t won as many trophies as they should do for such a big club. Even for us now – we are a young team, we are improving but the chances we have given ourselves? We have to put that right. We have to get over the line in one of them.

“You are proud to have played in the European Cup final. It’s a memory you will never forget, but you don’t go there to lose. It’s a bitter pill to swallow when you lose the final of the Champions League, and the way we went down.

“It is a memory that never goes away too quickly. You still think about it now. Maybe – hopefully – if we get to the final, we can think about putting it right then. We probably took more positives from last year than negatives.

“The thoughts of the run we had, the teams that we beat and the confidence that we gained. Then you see how we are playing in the Premier League – we have only lost one game – that is confidence and helping us move forward as a team.”

Of Bayern’s defensive approach over both legs of their Champions League tie, Milner added: “I’d like to think teams have that respect for us.

“We got to the Champions League final last year. We got to the Europa League final in 2016. We are challenging for the Premier League. Whether teams take notice is not really for us to worry about. But they take notice after they have played us and we have put them out.

“We have played better games but it is a different sort of performance that you need here to beat a top team like Bayern. You could see some of the experience that we have gained over the last few years come through.

“There is always room for improvement. The experience came through and we restricted them but there were a couple of times were sloppy on the ball, there a few sloppy decisions when we played a bit quick and we could have controlled it a bit more. All in all, though, I would be nit-picking. To come here and win like we did? Well’s that’s the team we are and we are a pretty young team.”

Milner also shares the sentiment of most Liverpool fans and players in wanting to avoid another English club in today’s Champions League draw.

“To have four teams in the last eight is great for England. I don’t particularly want to play any of the others, to be honest,” he said.

“It is always a weird feeling playing an English team in Europe. You get used to getting on a plane and instead you end up getting on a bus and going across the M62.

In regard to Liverpool competing on two fronts, he added: “We are in two competitions and we can manage that, game-wise.

“There are positives to being in this competition. We want to win it, for starters. Then there is the good feeling you get from winning in the style that we did, the confidence going into the weekend. We got a good feeling from getting out of the group and we have got a good feeling after knocking out Bayern Munich.”
