Rumour Mongering: Former Red Helping Liverpool Chase Maxi Gomez

Luis Suarez is apparently a key player in Liverpool’s attempts to sign the Celta Vigo striker.

This rumour comes from the Newspaper That Shall Not Be Named, but it’s far more fun to engage with than all the pundits dolefully claiming this weekend’s draw to be the end of Liverpool’s title run. So let’s dig in!

Per the rumours, which I’m almost positive we’re hearing for the first time, Liverpool are interested in signing the Uruguayan international after former Red and current Uruguayan, Luis Suarez, told Anfield higher-ups that Maxi Gomez was ‘the real deal’.

Gomez has had an impressive showing in La Liga, with 17 goals scored last season and nine so far this season. The 22-year-old will apparently be available for around £35 million for a summer transfer, which would put him in prime position to help bolster Liverpool’s oft-injured squad especially as Daniel Sturridge’s future at the club after this season is (once again) in question. If the Reds do go after Gomez, they’d be up against the likes of Chelsea and West Ham, who had been prepared to meet the striker’s £43.3m release clause this January, had he been interested in the move.

All that being said, Liverpool have had their eye on a couple of additional strikers for the squad in the past few transfer windows, including RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner whose release clause has been discussed at length on this site. Gomez would be a cheaper option should the Reds’ interest Werner fizzle out or be usurped by any of the other nine teams on Werner’s list, but it doesn’t seem likely that Liverpool would be willing to settle on this one.

Still, it’s good to know that Liverpool alumnus and walking McSweeney’s piece, Luis Suarez, is still keeping tabs and trying to help out his former club. Per one of the worst tabloids ever, anyway.
