Sean Cox set to leave rehab centre one year after assault

Liverpool supporter Sean Cox, who sustained serious injuries after being attacked prior to a Champions League game last season, spoke publicly for the first time ahead of his departure from hospital, according to talkSPORT.

Cox was assaulted just before Liverpool’s quarter-final tie last year by a Roma fan, suffering bleeding around the brain as a result that required emergency surgery.

He spent several months in hospital before being transferred to a rehabilitation centre, and he is now due to leave this week for the first time.

Cox will attend a Liverpool Legends b Republic of Ireland Legends match on Friday evening that aims to raise funds for the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust.

The match, due to be played at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, will feature former Liverpool greats like Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Ian Rush.

Cox sent a thank-you message to those who’ve supported him over the last year in a video released by Off The Ball.

The Roma fan who assaulted him, named Simone Mastrelli, was imprisoned for three-and-a-half years in February after pleading guilty to the attack.
