Simon Mignolet’s Only Focus is on Liverpool and the Present

He may now be second on the depth chart, but the Belgian ‘keeper isn’t interested in thinking about what’s next.

It won’t have been easy for Simon Mignolet to go from playing regularly to battling for the starting job to falling to second choice for Liverpool, not when he’s still fairly young for a goalkeeper and eager to keep his place in the Belgian national team.

The 31-year-old has handled it about as well as one could, though, and by all accounts remains a key senior figure for in training and off the pitch as Liverpool get down to the business of pushing for their first league title in nearly three decades.

“As a whole, this is the strongest team I’ve ever experienced at Liverpool,” Mignolet told Voetbal Niuews this week. “We have a strong team, we are very strong across the board. In the past we also had a strong team but then we were perhaps lacking.

“It’s been 29 years now since Liverpool have won the league title and the fans obviously want to win that competition very much. As a group, though, as players, we want to win everything, both the Champions League and the Premier League.”

As part of his role as one of the squad’s more veteran players, he says he isn’t giving his future any thought right now; that his only focus is on doing what he can to help Liverpool’s present. Anything else can be dealt with when the time comes.

“For Liverpool and Belgium, I play in two great teams and that is fantastic to experience,” he noted. “At the moment you do not dwell on [the future], because you are part of it and you are in the moment.”
