John Henry Wants a Champions League Trophy on Saturday—Then to Win the Premier League

Liverpool’s owner is committed to making an already great squad even better in order to win the Premier League.

Liverpool just completed a 97-point Premier League season and are preparing for their second consecutive Champions League final, but team owner John Henry says that whatever happens on Saturday, the Reds will be stronger next season.

He also says that whatever happens won’t make up for not winning the Premier League this year—and that just as they’re currently seeking redemption for missing on the Champions League last season, next year the goal will be on domestic redemption.

“It’s an amazing feeling given what happened last year in the final,” Henry told Sky from Madrid today. “We felt we had unfinished business so to get back here is really gratifying. But they (Premier League and Champions League) are different.

“This doesn’t make up for it. Not winning the Premier League this year means it’s an even larger goal for next year. Sort of like going back to the Champions League final this year was something our guys set their minds on. We’ll be set on winning next year.”

In order to do that, Henry insisted that the funds will be there to make an already strong squad—which he believes was one of the two best in the world this season—even better, though any specifics on that front will have to wait at least a few days.

“We’re going to have a go, and we’re strong already,” he noted. “We haven’t gone through that process yet, because we’re still playing, but every year we’ve shown we’re willing to invest in the right player and do it the right way so that the club is sustainable.

“We were up against almost an unstoppable force. I think these two teams (Liverpool and City) were the best two teams in the world this year. I’m just glad we were still standing on the last day of the season.”
