However, respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague says Jurgen Klopp’s side are now actively discussing a potential deal for the player with the Dutch club.
Balague revealed the news on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily Podcast.
De Ligt is interested in following Frenkie De Jong to Barcelona but is being heavily influenced by his agent Mino Raiola, who wants a huge fee for his part in brokering a deal, which Liverpool are more willing to pay than the La Liga side.
The lure of playing alongside Virgil van Dijk is also giving the Reds a leg up in their pursuit.
Either way, Liverpool appear to be firmly in the mix for De Ligt’s signature at this stage.
