He was about to begin the final year of his Reds contract and had refused to sign a new deal to extend his stay at the club after initially agreeing to on the condition he’d be loaned back to Sporting, according to the Echo.
Liverpool would have stood to make just £270,000 had they kept Camacho until next summer, so the £5million deal (rising to £7million in add-ons) represents good business for the club.
A healthy sell-on clause has also been included in Camacho’s Sporting contract, and Liverpool have the option to buy him back in future should be develop into a top player in his homeland.
