Pepe Reina On Liverpool’s Success and Being Their “Number One Fan”

The former Liverpool star is enjoying the Reds’ resurgence.

My mother has no interest in football. Or rather, she does, but the American kind. She knows that I love Liverpool, and she’s watched a few games with me, but the game has never captured her.

All that being said, every couple of months, she will ask me, “So what’s going on with Pepe Reina?” She loves him. It genuinely tickles me how much she still cares about him. Even if he did nothing else of note in his nine years at Liverpool, he would still hold a special place in my heart.

Reina, though, obviously accomplished much more than just earning my mother’s eternal loyalty. He will go down in the history books as one of Liverpool Football Club’s best keepers, and was an integral part of Rafa Benitez’s side.

Now watching from Italy, where he plays for AC Milan, Reina talked to the official site about what it’s like watching Liverpool’s resurgence on the European stage.

“It’s good for football itself. That’s where Liverpool belongs and hopefully it will be like that for many years to come,” he said.

”They have done a fantastic job from the top of the club to the last player. They seem hungry to me and that’s important in football - to become even better and better.

”With that joy of improvement every year, it only comes better and better.”

The 36-year-old also admits that he still watches this team whenever he can.

“I’m probably the number one fan. It’s home. I was there eight years - nine with the season I was on loan with Napoli. I consider Liverpool my home and it will always be like that. It’s what they say; once a Red, always a Red.”
